Cervical Cancer: Understanding the Symptoms and Treatment Options

    SymptomsTreatment
    Cervical Canvcer

Cervical cancer is the second most common lethal gynecological tumor worldwide and a leading cause of death among women. The Pap smear is the primary detection method, and the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technique is used to detect cervical cancer.

HPV vaccines are used to prevent cervical cancer. Many reasons are linked to HPV infection: multiple sex partners, smoking, early-age intercourse, and patients having a history of venereal disease.

    Symptoms

The most common symptoms are vaginal bleeding, longer period, pain in the pelvic wall and rectal wall, and discharge with blood content.

Other symptoms like abdominal pain, leg swelling, restlessness, and hematuria can occur.

Our oncology-dedicated unit is best for cervical cancer screening in West Bengal.

Early-stage cervical cancer is asymptomatic; patients are recommended for routine gynecologic care, cystoscopy, and sigmoidoscopy. The common way of finding a tumor is visible on the cervix, and for deeper tumors in the cervical gland, doctors use biopsy to identify and inspect large tumors.

Cervical cancer is divided into four stages by clinical exam:

Stage I. When tumors are limited in the cervix

Stage II. Tumors are extending into the upper vaginal area.

Stage III. Tumors are spreading out to the lower vagina or pelvic wall.

Stage IV. Invading the bladder and rectum and spreading other areas of the tumors.

    Treatment

Cervical cancer treatment depends on the stage of the disease, the patient's overall health, and other factors.

In the early days, ablation of cancerous tumors or entire uterus by surgery known as hysterectomy.

Using radiation to kill cancer cells in the cervix, doctors use two methods: external beam radiation therapy and brachytherapy.

Chemotherapy is the third treatment option that uses IV drug injection to kill cancer cells.

In the last few years, many treatment options have arisen, like targeted therapy to kill specific cancer cells.

Immunotherapy is also useful to kill cancer cells by using our own body’s immune system.

Women need to get regular screening for cancer cells, such as Pap tests and HPV tests, to detect and cure at an early stage.
